Trump impeachment, Uganda elections, Covid-19 in France & the EU, Germany after Merkel

Donald Trump was blocked from social media for his final days. Meanwhile, all of Uganda was under an internet blackout during a presidential election which also featured troops on the streets. And during the vote count, soldiers surrounded the home of pop star-turned- opposition leader Bobi Wine. Earlier, Wine – whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi – levelled allegations of mass fraud and repeated how cutting off the internet is part of the plan.

Panellists on this show have been known to quip that the general impression is that whatever country you are from, yours has done worse than its neighbours when it comes to Covid-19. Time now for an update on France. It was the week when over-75s started getting vaccinated and while the campaign is far behind neighbours like the UK and Germany, the government is confident it will have dispensed one million jabs by the end of the month. And in the short term, as new variants spread across Europe, the prime minister announced that the national curfew of 8pm is being moved up to 6pm for at least two weeks.

For 16 years, she has quietly crushed all comers. This time though, it truly seems like the beginning of the end for Angela Merkel, who will retire at the next general election in September. An important first step is Saturday with the designation of her successor as head of the Christian Democrats. A choice that's sure to have far-reaching consequences for the whole continent.
