Not fast enough: As planet warms, Europe spars over car emissions

Is now the time to be compromising on carbon emissions? EU environment ministers met on Tuesday, hot on the heels of a new UN climate report that warns it may already be too late to reverse the acceleration of global warming. After 13 hours of talks, a vintage late-night EU compromise emerged - this one to curb CO2 emissions for cars to 35% of their 2021 levels by 2030. The European Parliament wanted 40%, while Germany - egged on by automakers - led the charge to keep the target at 30%.
