Method used in Nice attack 'a first for IS group in France'

Wassim Nasr, FRANCE 24’s specialist in jihadist movements, says that using a vehicle to kill large numbers of people is new in France, but a method familiar to jihadists.

“We know that this modus operandi is also used in places like Israel or the West Bank, so it’s a common modus operandi” in other conflicts, Nasr explained.

He also said that the claim of responsibility made by the Islamic State group was deliberately crafted. “They chose very carefully their words,” he said. “They qualified the attacker as a soldier of the Islamic State group, which is very important, which shows us that there is a link, even if it’s a virtual one.”
