Corks fly as Champagne, Burgundy win UNESCO status
The historic vineyards, wine cellars and champagne houses of France's Champagne region and the unique soils of Burgundy’s vineyards were listed as world heritage sites by UNESCO on Saturday.

Referring to the Champagne region, the global body said the status covers "the places sparkling wine was developed using a second fermentation method in the bottle from the beginning of the 17th century until its early industrialisation in the 19th century".
Burgundy‘s vineyards were given heritage status for their intricately-defined soil types.
The decision was rubberstamped by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee meeting in Bonn on Saturday.
It brings to 41 the number of French sites on the world heritage list, which also includes the famed Saint-Emilion vineyards in the Bordeaux region.
