The quake struck west Kathmandu, causing buildings to collapse and leaving a pall of dust over the city, witnesses said.
The capital’s iconic Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site with century-old palaces and temples, was left in rubble according to pictures posted on social media. The Dharahara Tower, a landmark nine-storey structure built in 1832, also collapsed in the disaster.
The death toll is expected to rise further as rescue services rush to toppled office blocks in the capital.
