Video: Fighting for women’s rights in Afghanistan
For years under the Taliban, Afghanistan was considered one of the world’s worst places to be a woman. For International Women’s Day (March 8), FRANCE 24 travelled to the country to see how women there are attempting to reclaim their rights.

During the Taliban’s rule from 1996 to 2001, women in Afghanistan were excluded from public life, banned from going to school and even forbidden to step outside without a man.
But be it the country’s 10-member national women's cycling team, or a performance artist protesting the country's endemic sexual harassment, women are now breaking new ground in the conservative Muslim nation.
However, despite the progress made over the recent years, there is still a long way to go. Women who challenge the preconceptions of their role in Afghan society are often met with disapproval and even threats of violence.
